Why Civic -

  • Civic evokes the latin civis, citizen, and civitas, the social body of citizens, with the rights and responsibilities that connect members of a community.

  • We want to celebrate the Willamette Valley. It’s rich agricultural produce, in particular wine and Eugene's place in this ecosystem.

  • We focus on organic and biodynamic grape production vs industrial production.

  • We are using locally made clay amphora for the wine production which takes you back thousands of years to when wine was first made in similar vessels.

  • We are bringing it all downtown for a more direct and  interactive experience. Part of a major investment into our community revitalization.

Baseball Stadium

  • The building is a historic Eugene structure constructed in 1936 with unique wood truss system and high ceilings.  The same group that built this building, constructed the Eugene Civic Baseball Stadium in 1937, utilizing some of the same lumber as this Urban Winery building.   Although the Civic Baseball stadium burned down, its legacy lives on in this winery building.  The structure has much charm and character.   An effort has been made to bring the key aspects of the building to life which had been covered up by previous tenants.

The Project -

The Urban Winery Project is composed of a few interrelated elements:

  • Fully functioning winery, with in-house production of our own wines and wines from our Guest Wineries.

  • Wine Bar & Bottle Shop offers a unique selection of natural  wines, amphora wines and interesting grape varieties, representing wine regions across the globe at an attractive price.

  • Restaurant. The Lion & Owl bring their culinary expertise to downtown.

Civic Winery -

The Civic Winery has the capacity to process 8000 cases from grapes through fermentation, maturation and storage in a variety of vessels from amphorae to oak barrels, both in our production hall and temperature-controlled cellar. The winery is the heart of the building and will be visible from the restaurant and the wine bar/ bottle shop through large windows separating the various spaces.   The Civic Winery is setup to host private events, in a charming winery environment.

If you are curious about the amphora: they are made locally in Oregon by Andrew Beckham, under his brand name, NOVUM

For decades, Andrew has been teaching ceramics in the local public school district and years ago began his journey to making the best terracotta winemaking vessels in the world.

Lion & Owl -

One of the newest additions to Eugene’s culinary landscape, Lion & Owl will soon be anchored at the front of the Civic Winery building.

Owners Crystal Platt & Kirsten Hansen will move their successful mini-restaurant, airstream and all, from its current pop-up spot to a more permanent space within the building.  Inspired and eclectic brunch menu will remain the focus, though the expanded space will allow for an expanded menu: caviar, oysters and eventually dinner will be on offer alongside a well-curated champagne & wine selection as well as a  cocktail menu.

Civic Wines -

Wine Bar and Bottle Shop

The bar will provide a list of quality wines, including natural, global and amphora, by the glass and on tap, some of which will come from the winery. Our bottle shop will offer these and other wines for retail purchase.

The Wine Bar and Lion & Owl will provide our Guest Winery Clients operating in the urban winery a critical element of their business operation- direct to consumer exposure in an unparalleled  environment. Interaction between the winery operations and barrel storage will invite tours and educational opportunities for our guests. Direct sales of the wines in our wine bar and restaurant create this direct link from production to consumption and enjoyment. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for our clients.

News -

A great mention about Civic Winery & Wines in Wine Enthusiast magazine October 19th....

“Civic Winery & Wines is about to be Eugene’s newest urban winery. Founded by Craig Weicker and housed in a restored 1930s building, it will focus on organic, amphorae-aged wines including pét-nats and orange wine. Along with an accompanying wine bar, retail shop and an Airstream-housed restaurant called Lion & Owl, the winery is scheduled to open just before Thanksgiving.”
